Lifekind

Lifekind makes a variety of organic latex mattresses and were one of the pioneers in the organic mattress and bedding space in the 1990s. They developed latex mattresses that are well received by customers who can afford them. The only complaint is that they are on the firmer side, so if you are a side sleeper or someone who is prone to pressure points, these mattresses may not be for you.

Naturepedic

Naturepedic has a reputation for crafting quality organic mattresses. They focus on generous layers of organic cotton, wool, and latex in their beds. With options for both children and adults, most customers have good things to say about their quality, materials used, and customer experience. Those rare complaints mentioned durability and high prices.

Based on our aggregated reviews and our scoring method, we recommend Naturepedic in this match up!

Best Mattress Ever
I switched from a Sleep Number to The Euro mattress and I only wish I had done it sooner. I haven't slept so good in years. I purchased the medium-firm and it is perfect. I am grateful to Lifekind and its excellent customer service. Thank you!

organic mattress
packaging damaged in shipping, so it sat in warehouse for a while. So far mattress seems OK

Great mattress
Purchased a Euro ten years ago. Beautiful mattress and shows no sign of wear or age. It is as wonderful now as when it arrived. Definitely is firm, with excellent support and stability. Those needing plushness may need to buy a mattress topper.

Great Sleep!
I've never slept better. Great feel.

Simply the Best!
My husband and I invested in the Lifekind Euro mattress in 2015. After almost 2 years, I am happy to report that this mattress is simply the best of all the conventional or natural mattresses that we have ever experienced. Thanks for being there, Lifekind!

Thank you
I am sleeping more soundly on my new firm mattress. I love it!

I love this bed!
I am so grateful that we got this mattress. I knew it was a risk to get it without seeing it or trying it first, but decided to go for it. We got the firm variety since I tend to prefer sleeping on firmer surfaces. It was way better than I expected it to be and I already had high hopes. It had absolutely no chemical odor, which is to be expected, but I was still very pleased to find this to be the case since most things you buy these days smell like chemicals. It also is ridiculously comfortable. I love it more than any bed I have ever had. Thanks Lifekind for making such a great bed.

Wonderful!
So nice to sleep on a clean non-toxic mattress! And it's very comfortable as a bonus. Also love the fact that its environmentally friendly. The rubber trees are harvested sustainably and as I recently read in Mr. Bader's book, the animals who contribute wool are treated humanely. Kindness and compassion for the earth and fellow creatures who inhabit it provide us all with a healthy sustainable environment. Thank you Mr. Bader!

Not One Regret
Over the years, I have bought four of these mattresses: two twin XLs, one Queen and one Cal King. Obviously, they are great. We like firm mattresses and everyone who as laid on our beds comments on how great they feel. I sold all but the Queen and these have excellent resale value. I would buy another but Full XL is not available despite being the most logical mattress size possible (a full mattress is the length of a regular twin, Full XL is the length of a Queen, but America is more fat than tall).

Almost too comfortable!
I bought this mattress in medium-firm a couple of months ago to upgrade my son from toddler to big bed. Customer service was great, Naomi was very helpful. The mattress feels amazing, so much so that i now fall asleep with my son in his bed. Instead of sneaking out after ten minutes to get my chores done, i sleep for hours until I wake up and wander groggily to my own not-so-comfortable-anymore bed. My son loves his bed and sleeps so well.

Great mattress
This is our 2nd Organic Rubber Latex Mattress. We bought a King for us 10 years ago and love it so much that we just bought another one for our kids. Most comfortable and mattress we've ever slept in, not to mention it's chemical & pesticide free. :-)

Great mattress!
Slept on this mattress for over 7 yrs and still loving it! We bought the firm option because I had bad back problems form our old mattress. This one has amazing support although sometimes I wish half of it was softer... Overall I'm very pleased with it and would recommend to family.

Euro Firm is THE BEST MATTRESS
Switched from a traditional mattress to this incredible organic product, which I got in FIRM, and I have never slept better in my life. I also love that I am supporting an US company. Keep doing what you are doing! As a loyal customer and huge fan for 15 years, I am satisfied with not only all the wonderful items I have purchased and enjoyed over the years, but am especially impressed with your outstanding customer service. Thank you, Lifekind! And thank you, Naomi! G.G.

Thank you for such a high quality product
It's been three years since I purchased my Lifekind bed and I still couldn't be happier with it! I absolutely love the rest and comfort it provides as well as the organic/cruelty free philosophy behind its creation. Truly one of the best purchases I've ever made. Thank you for such a high quality product. I've chosen to purchase another pillow from you and am confident I will be just as satisfied.

Love it!
We purchased one of these in 2013 because I was pregnant at the time and sleeping with my 6'2" tall husband on my old queen sized mattress (15 plus years old) was not cutting it. After talking with Sylvia (who has since helped us with other purchases, including two Shastas for our toddler/guest room as well as an additional Euro for my parents -- they tried ours and were converted!) we purchased the firm option and we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE our kingsized bed! It was fabulous to have during the ups and downs of pregnancy, and now that I'm no longer pregnant, we STILL love our bed. My husband no longer sleeps with his feet hanging over the edge and we don't sink into a pit in the center of the mattress like we did on our old one. It's so nice to wake up feeling relaxed, refreshed and healthy instead of stuffy, sore and tired.

Extreme satisfaction
Extreme satisfaction... to the point that I tell my bed how much I love it when I awaken in the morning. It's the most refreshing sleep I've ever experienced. Had I known there was a difference, I'd have made this investment long ago. I have recommended you repeatedly, handing out your catalogues to others interested in Lifekind products. Excellent quality and customer service. The products are in a class of their own. I researched most of the other organic mattress manufacturers, and there really was no comparison once I looked at all of the factors.

lifelong customer
We purchased our mattress and wood slat foundation, together with our furniture, several years ago. Our bed is the BEST we've ever had and provides an amazing night's sleep. We wake up every day refreshed and alert. This has never been the case with beds we've owned in the past. The fact that our mattress and foundation was made at the only organic mattress eco-factory in North America is also extremely important to us. Finally, the assistance we received from our product specialist was invaluable. It is difficult to make such an important purchase without actually seeing the product, but the process was seamless thanks to our product specialist. I enjoy all our Lifekind products, including the dish towels, bath towels and washcloths. They are so soft and last forever. I've had friends comment on how pretty they are. Thanks, Lifekind. I'm definitely a lifelong customer!

I am not breathing in toxic fumes as I sleep
LOVE the mattresses (two so far). They have really eased my back woes. I love that I am not breathing in toxic fumes as I sleep. I chose you because of your sincere commitment to quality from beginning to end of the entire manufacturing and delivery process.

Most comfortable mattresses on the planet
Hands down, the most comfortable mattresses on the planet. The people at Lifekind went way above the call of duty helping me decide which mattress to purchase. They are professional, helpful, and patient.

I'm the King of Dreamland!
I've had my mattress for a week now. It arrived earlier than I expected (Thanks!) It's been so nice not waking up inside a deflated air bed feeling like a human taco. Instead of having to pump it up before bedtime and during the night, I just sleep until morning now. What a concept. When I first realized that only an idiot sleeps this way, I went to my local natural bed store. The first time I went in there, they tried to sell me pillows and blankets and were really scattered in explaining my options for beds. I left my head spinning. I decided to give them one more chance, so a few days later I went back and the service was even worse. After researching different companies from a Google search, Lifekind stood out. I'm very confident now that I'm actually sleeping on the mattress that I made the best choice. Thank you for being so kind and quick when I started emailing you questions during my research phase. Every single part of the process was smooth. And your personal thank you note was a classy touch and made me laugh. I'm not taking a good night's sleep for granted anymore. I'm the King of Dreamland!

Amazing!
We scoured the internet to find the perfect organic mattress and have looked into so many different companies. It was a tough decision to buy an expensive mattress without seeing it first and we are SO GLAD we decided on this one! Lifekind is an amazing company and the customer service is phenomenal. We have been sleeping so well and LOVE our new mattress.

Great bed
We own three of these for our children. We bought our first one about 4 years ago and have been very happy with all of them. They are super comfortable to sleep on when we sleep with our children and I love the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are sleeping on mattresses free from from toxic chemicals! Well worth the price.

Amazing Bed!
We have had our Euro now for about 6 months. We ordered a box spring and a bed frame as well. We are absolutely in love with this bed. I have never slept so well! We are organic in everything else, and finally took the plunge to an organic bed and couldn't be happier. The sales rep was very helpful choosing our bed and everything arrived well packed and clean.

Love my bed
This is the best bed I have ever owned. A few days ago I was faced with the option of spending the night in a hotel or driving for an hour and a half (with traffic it was about 2 hours), I drove home, knowing I would sleep well in my Lifekind bed : )

Wool pillowtop skipped sanitization process terrible smell
I opened the box with the Lifekind King Wool Pillowtop and it smelled like manure. I thought maybe it was the packaging and put it on my new organic King mattress that did not have any smell. The manure smell got worse and my eyes and throat burned. My husband also had an adverse reaction as did our three year old who said "yuck" when she sat on the bed. I hung the pillowtop outside in the sun in the hopes the smell would go away and again we had the same adverse reactions. We've had to sleep in our guest room since JUNE. Lifekind took the pillowtop back and upon inspection deemed that it had skipped a sanitization process. Our bedroom still smells like manure and even after having all of my bedding professionally laundered the smell still lingers. Lifekind asked me what I would like to do and when I asked them to remediate the damage caused by the defective pillowtop they said no to my request. They didn't offer anything to help mitigate a problem Lifekind caused. I now have to buy a new mattress, duvet and pillows and they aren't taking any responsibility. Absolutely do not buy anything from this company. It's appalling how I have been treated.

Mattress Topper Smelled like Barnyard, AWFUL
I have been buying products from Lifekind for 20 years. I have bought several mattress wool toppers and loved them. This one smelled like a barnyard and won't outgas. It made my eyes burn, gave my son a rash when he came and laid on it. I washed my sheets in hot water twice and the smell remains. It is in my very expensive Lifekind Mattress now as well. When I wrote, I was told to air the topper, even though I had. They have had this experience before based on another customer who wrote the exact same review (and whose room still smells like manure). I will never do business with them again. They are taking back the topper but will not replace the mattress that their topper contaminated. There are so many great organic mattress companies out there. Go find any other one than Lifekind and OMI. Sad what they've become.

Non-existent Customer Support
Customer service is very responsive and helpful when you are in the process of placing your order. After that, you are left on your own to deal with the rest of the shipping and delivery process. There is an absolute lack of coordination between Lifekind and their third-party shipper, and customer service provides zero assistance in dealing with the numerous shipping and delivery problems. The hassle of dealing with all of these issues is not worth any amount of comfort provided by the mattress and is certainly worth the expense of this mattress.

Worst customer service and inconsistent mattress firmness
1. Customer service doesn’t help with shipping once an order is placed. 2. The medium firm Euro I purchased 4 years ago was too firm so I bought a topper to correct. The medium firm Euro I just punched was much too soft. No help from Lifekind.

Organic Wool Topper Pillowtop
Generally, I have loved all the products I have gotten from Lifekind, with one HUGE exception of this product. So, this wool product is NOT washed or treated any other way, except from farm to some sort of OXYGEN treatment and then off to customer. Knowing wool mattresses intimately and having made them myself in the old fashioned way from generation to generation within my family, I expected the Best of the products. When I got the pillowtop, it was stinking pretty bad; but, I wanted it so badly, I just left it open thinking the stink would go away. A whole month passed and it didn't go away, I called customer care. All credit to the gal I spoke with, she DID suggest for me to return it; however, she also insisted that it IS a very top quality product and hopefully the stink will go away, she did mention that if I want to they will take it back at that time, but I really badly wanted it to work, so I said it's okay I'm going to give it a shot. Now, over 6 months and moving it from the top layer, then under my own existing pillowtop, I just took it out and put it in my living room, not knowing what to do with this over $600 product... Anyway, just want to let you know that I've been very very happy until I got very very scared with this Wool product, unfortunately I am a Wool fan, but this particular product just didn't cut it. Honestly, now I don't know what to do with it... And I know I can no longer return it because at this point it is used... I am wondering if I take the wool out of it and treat it as I think it should be treated: washing, drying, beating and repeating a few times of this under the sun until the smell is totally gone? I had asked that darling girl who helped me, if I should put it under the sun, she said, "no, it will smell even worse, it's just a farm smell," So, I'm wondering if I go through all that watching, drying, etc... routine, and if it smells similar or the same, the I've just wasted so much time and effort... is there any other suggestion, i wonder?

LOVE this mattress
We love this mattress. I was very worried about buying a mattress for my 2 year old because in the past when I've bought traditional mattresses, the off-gassing took months (that was before I knew better about the horrible chemicals in mattresses). My son had a Naturepedic crib mattress and the transition to the Naturepedic twin mattress was a good choice. When the mattress was delivered we set it up in his room and he was able to use it that very night. No off-gassing horrible chemicals, no bad smells. What a relief! I'm very sensitive to chemical smells so I was happy to not have to deal with that here. We started off on the firm side of the mattress for my 2 year old, but it was very hard. He's been sleeping on the firm side for 1 month, but he keeps waking up at night. We also found that he was trying to put his entire body on his pillow, so we thought he would prefer a softer feel. A few days ago we flipped it over to the quilted side and that feels much better. We still need to get a waterproof pad for it, since the quilted side is not waterproof and he's not yet potty-trained. I would not hesitate to purchase this mattress again. It was very expensive, but if he uses it for 10 years, that's only $75/year. Well worth the peace of mind.

You won't regret this purchase.
I was nervous when I purchased this mattress because many reviews say it is too firm. Is it firm? Yes. Uncomfortable? No. My son went from a conventional plastic-y crib mattress to this mattress. This one is considerably softer and more comfortable. I lay with him at night as he falls asleep, and I am not uncomfortable on the mattress. I have had no complaints. In fact, we are thinking of buying one for each of our other children. This is a great mattress and is one of the most affordable non-toxic mattresses available. It is firm but not uncomfortable. I highly recommend!

If you loved the Naturepedic crib mattress, you'll love this one too!
This is a fantastic kid's mattress that made for a seamless transition from the Naturepedic crib mattress. If you're unfamiliar with these mattresses and are accustomed to soft, plush "grown-up" mattresses, you may find this too firm or too stark. However, it's perfect for a kid's growing body. There is no worry of off-gassing or chemical smells - it came right out of the box and onto the bed with no airing out time. The waterproof side is great, with a nice texture that is nothing like a plastic-y waterproof pad. This is a high-quality mattress made from high-quality materials that will leave everyone sleeping well at night!

Best choice in organic kid mattresses
Ordered this mattress after much research and debate. I am happy with my decision. The mattress was not too firm as other reviews remarked, and is actually almost softer than I wanted because I was hoping the firmer the mattress the longer it will last. It is certainly much softer than the 2-sided naturepedic crib mattress. I bought this for my son transitioning to a big boy bed and expect it to last through childhood. I believe it will and it is very comfortable. We are using the waterproof side which I LOVE. It protects the top and sides without having an awful crunchy, noisy sound or feeling. There was a slight natural odor as some commented in reviews but only if you put your nose to the bed and you can't smell it from the waterproof side. Certainly no strong odor or chemical smell. It is expensive, but compared to adult organic, non-toxic mattresses it is much cheaper and I felt was worth the investment for my son's health and my peace of mind.

Feels Lumpy
12/13/2015 Update: After receiving an email from Naturepedic that the mattress I purchased was defective, I ordered a new one. We've had the mattress for about five months now. No issues with lumpiness. However, I feel like the outer trim of the mattress is starting to loose it's shape/looking bent. I don't believe this is normal wear-and-tear because I've never had this issue with my other mattress. =( I was excited to purchase this matress for my toddler as her new big girl bed; however, I was disappointed with the product for a few reasons: 1) I grew up sleeping on very firm mattresses. I prefer them and enjoy them. Although firm, something about this mattress made it quite uncomfortable. It's just too firm. 2) The discomfort of the firm mattress could be that it feels lumpy. It seems like individual springs can be felt while laying on the bed and shifting positions. 3) The waterproof side of the matress seemed loud. The cover was not taught, so when I moved my arms across it, it was as if I was laying on vinyl plastic that can be heard when moving. I purchased a NP crib mattress and had no problems with its quality; however, the twin mattress was a big disappointment. If you have a recommendation for a quality organic mattress, please share.

Barely used and it is falling apart - EXTREMELY disappointing purchase
I never write reviews but I am EXTREMELY disappointed with this mattress. We've had it for just over a year now and we still have not transitioned my toddler to the bed so this mattress has only been slept on a handful of times by the occasional house guest. When we first received this mattress I noticed that it elevated in the center so it almost felt as if you were rolling down hill on either side of the mattress. I thought perhaps this was because it was new and that it would settle down over time but sadly it hasn't. Also the sides of the mattress are sagging. It's almost as if the side of the mattress totally collapses on itself when you sit on it. I flipped the mattress over to the non-potty training side and it weirdly lumpy. I wanted to love this mattress. I paid more for this mattress than I wanted to because I trusted the brand and I definitely wanted an organic mattress. But I'm sad to say that this mattress was not even close to what we were hoping for. We wanted a mattress our toddler could grow up on, now I'm going to have to buy him a new mattress before he even gets a chance to use it.

Expensive, but worth every penny!
Since infancy, my now 3 year-old daughter has slept on a Naturepedic crib mattress in her crib and toddler bed. So when she recently transitioned to a twin-sized "big girl" bed (Charleston Solid Hardwood Platform Bed Frame - Twin Size), Naturepedic was our first choice for a mattress that we knew would be free of chemical flame retardants. We opted for the 2-in-1 mattress instead of the single-sided one for $100 cheaper because we knew from experience (with the crib mattress) that it's 100-times easier to wipe up accidents from the waterproof fabric of the mattress itself, than to have to remove a separate mattress pad and throw it in the wash. Plus, many waterproof mattress pads are made of PVC/vinyl, a toxic plastic the emits phthalate fumes that you don't want your child inhaling in their sleep! The waterproof side of the Naturepedic mattress is made of food-grade polyethylene, which is non-toxic and doesn't give off any harmful fumes. Yes, the waterproof side of the mattress is somewhat firm, but not excessively so, and most importantly, my daughter has never complained about being uncomfortable. After all, she spent the first 3+ years of her life sleeping on an ultra-firm crib mattress, so she doesn't know any differently when it comes to sleeping surfaces. Plus, pediatricians recommend a firm mattress for younger kids, whose bones and skeletal structures are still developing. Once my daughter is older (and fully nighttime potty-trained!), we'll flip the mattress over and use the quilted side. This mattress was recently put to the test and passed with flying colors! A few weeks after we bought it, my daughter had an upset stomach in the middle of the night. She threw up a total of 4 times, soaking her pajamas and bed sheets, but the waterproof surface of this Naturepedic mattress completely withstood it all. Each time, all we needed to do was to wipe the surface of the mattress with Seventh Generation Disinfecting Multi-Surface Wipes, 70 Count, change the sheets and put her back to bed. We wouldn't have had enough mattress pads to cope with all the throw-ups that she had. In short, this mattress helped make a rough night a little less difficult for all of us. I highly recommend it. Grade: A

Good for Allergies; Hard Though
Switching to this mattress stopped an allergic reaction I was having to my memory foam mattress (all the chemicals!). So in that respect, 5 stars. But this mattress is very hard, so I had to buy a latex mattress topper to be able to sleep on it.

HARD
My 13 year old wanted a really firm mattress, so we bought him this one. He even wanted the firmer side up. That lasted a day. So we flipped it to the "less firm" side, which was still way too hard. The two sides are board v. Heavy blanket on board. We wound up buying him a 3" featherbed. I still find it too hard, but he likes it now, though, and finds it just right. The featherbed made all the difference.

Well made but extra firm
We purchased this mattress for our now 3 year-old son. I have read that sleeping on an extra firm mattress is good for growing bodies, but I must say that as a mother laying next to him at bedtime, it feels a bit uncomfortable. That being said, our son has never complained, and it has been almost 6 months since he started sleeping on it. Naturepedic has a good price for an organic mattress, so we will simply purchase an organic topper for comfort when he needs it.

Great idea. Not that comfortable.
I really like the idea of this bed and the fact that it doesn't have most of the nasty chemicals in it that other beds do. That said this is not the most comfortable bed. Its heavy and feels bouncy. My little boy doesn't seem to mind it, but it just isn't that comfortable of a bed.

uncomfortable
I hate to give a low rating to a company that makes a matress with little or no fire retardants, but, this mattress was very uncomfortable. It felt like an old crib matress. Even on the softer side of the mattress, you could feel every spring.

Five Stars
Great mattress for our 2 year old. No chemical smells, and nice cleanable surface.

This has been great for my daughter
This has been great for my daughter. Feels like a regular mattress. It has held up very well, despite my daughter jumping on it at least weekly, and sometimes with her friends (it is on the floor for safety reasons). I would give it 5 stars if it were cheaper....seemed a little bit more expensive than it needed to be.

Great item and seller!
This is the second time I have purchased this item and I am very happy with it. As described & well packaged. I would recommend this product and seller.

And sleep comfortably knowing my kids are not exposed to harmful chemicals
I have three of these that I have purchased over the years for my three kids. Outstanding quality and complete satisfaction. Never had to offgas it. And sleep comfortably knowing my kids are not exposed to harmful chemicals. This mattress is supported by the environmental working group.

Excellent. Item was purchased for 2 year old
Excellent. Item was purchased for 2 year old. Used on the floor (montessori inspired) with a low profile boxspring. Child sleeps well and I've even fell asleep on it. Very expensive but worth the cost. No odors or new mattress smell.

comfortable and quite dense so I imagine it will hold ...
The bed was purchased for my 3 year old granddaughter because my daughter felt it was important for her to have an organic mattress. We chose this one because it was mid-price and had one waterproof side. Also free shipping with Amazon prime! The bed seems to be very supportive, comfortable and quite dense so I imagine it will hold up well for many years.

Five Stars
great product!!

Great buy
Bought this for my 2 year old son. There is no chemical smell with this mattress which is 1 reason why I purchased. My daughters mattress from a regular mattress brand was purchased 3 years ago and still stinks like chemicals when I take the sheets and cover off. This mattress is also great with the waterproof side that actually works and is easy to clean. Comfortable and my son loves it

Good organic product.
Not for those with aches and pains, but good for kids! We have a twin and a full size of this brand and are very happy. We also bought real mattress protectors since the mattresses are expensive, but so worth it.

great mattress
Few people realize the dangerous chemicals in traditional mattresses. It may see like a huge expense to spring for the organic mattress, but it's well worth it knowing that your child is not inhaling toxins while s/he sleeps. As far as organic mattresses go, this one is extremely comfortable. The vendor, "Elephant Ears" I think it was called was excellent and offered free shipping, which saved me $150. This was a very good buy. My baby sleeps like a baby in it.

Five Stars
Excellent quality and finish. Perfect for toddler transitioning from naturepedic infant mattress.

Five Stars
Fits great for a 3 year old. No smell as others stated

Great Mattress
This mattress is great. We don't think it is at all hard as other reviewers have complained. If you want a super deep pillow top type mattress then this probably isn't the one for you, but for a high quality, comfortable, basic organic mattress this one fits perfectly.

Loyal Customer
Love Naturepedic! Wish they made a king size!!

Comfy, safe and reasonably priced
I bought these for my twins after they grew out of their cribs. I had also used Naturepedic mattresses in their cribs. These mattresses are comfortable and reasonably priced for organic, chemical free mattresses. I would always recommend this brand and will buy this brand for my bed when it's time to replace our current mattress.

Five Stars
Fabulous bed! Zero odor, soft Quilting, natural materials.

Great!
Great service, love these mattresses. Hopefully it lasts 20 years!

Four Stars
A little bit too hard on one side.

Hard as a rock
I bought two of these mattresses for my daughters (age 7 and 11) thinking that the the firmness shouldn't be an issue for bodies as light as they are. I love the fact that they are organic, and that they have a water proof side which is good for the earlier, bed-wetting ages. However, they are so hard that my daughters complain about them. I tried a thin topper, and that didn't work. I eventually bought a 3 inch organic foam topper for one of the mattresses and that did the trick for my older daughter. However, the cost worked out such that I would have been better off getting an organic foam mattress to start with.

Four Stars
Great mattress, a little on the firm side which is what I was looking for.

I feel safe, but man it's expensive!
I bought this mattress because it was chemical-free, and I feel really good about that. I thought it was hypoallergenic, but when I received it, noticed that it had side vents. When I called the company about this, they tried to tell me that dust mites stay on the top layer only, so they offered a mattress pad. I'm a physician, and I wasn't happy with that response. I had to buy an additional hypoallergenic cover. It's nice that one side is waterproof, and the other side cottony. I've had the mattress for about a year now for my two year old. It sagged a bit immediately, and the top layer is a bit loose. These are made on a one-by-one basis, and made to order, so I guess that's ok. I thought this would last him 'til high school, but now I'm not so sure. It hurts my back to sleep on it because it's rather firm. After a year, it seems to have an odd-rice-homey sort of smell. Not sure I would buy again because of the price. Maybe all natural/chemical free mattresses sag?! I gave it four stars instead of three because at the time of purchase, there were not a lot of options out there for safer mattresses.

Awesome organic mattress
This is our second Naturepedic twin mattress, and we've also purchased multiple crib mattresses. We always love them, and feel good about our kids burying their faces in this organic, harsh-chemical free mattress. I read through the reviews, but have to disagree that this mattress is too firm, at least, not for a child. I bought it for my preschooler, and little kids often use firmer mattresses. I've fallen asleep on it multiple times and think it's fine, and my kids sleep well on these. I love that one side is water-proof for now, and that we can flip it over for a softer side for when the kids are a bit older. I have no complaints at all. UPDATE: At age 6, my son did start to complain that his mattress was too hard. It was wonderful to be able to simply flip his mattress over from the water-proof side to the softer side and please him without having to buy a new mattress! I also have to add that Naturepedic stands behind their lifetime guarantee. After less than 6 months, a spring had somehow rotated itself sideways in our second of these mattresses and was poking to the side. We don't know why or how this happened, but we wrote to Naturepedic and sent them pictures, and they immediately sent us a new mattress. No charge, no hassle. Very, very pleased.

Five Stars
Great mattress.

Cheaper from Amazon than the company's own website!
It was pretty weird to buy a mattress online, but I had no luck finding a local store that sold organic (or just non-toxic) mattresses. I really wanted my son to have a mattress that wouldn't be harmful to his health. This one fits the bill, and it seems to be the least expensive option out there. The manufacturer's own website has it listed for $100 more than Amazon, plus they charge $75 shipping. I was pleased with Amazon's price and the free shipping (from Pennsylvania to California, no less!) The mattress is firm, but comfortable. My 3-year-old son has been sleeping just fine on it. I took a nap on it one day, and I noticed it was firmer than my own mattress.... but I slept just fine.

I really wanted to love this mattress
I really wanted to love this mattress. Organic was a priority for me and when reading the reviews it seemed perfect. Unfortunately, the mattress I received is hollow. There is absolutely no support in the middle of this mattress and if an adult was to lay on it, it caves dramatically in the center. I have no idea if my particular mattress is defective but I am definitely disappointed in the product.

Comfortable & Organic!
I did a lot of research on mattresses and the incidences of sids when my daughter was born, and ultimately went with an organic crib mattress. When it came time to getting her a big girl bed, I had a very hard time finding full organic mattresses. Not one store in my entire city sells them. So I turned online, and researched every brand I could find. I needed an organic mattress that was not based with latex, and so many of them are. I'm allergic to latex, and fear my daughter will eventually share that allergy. Naturepedic is the brand I continued to come back to, as the best option on the market. Expensive, yes, but there are others that are far more, and none that are less that are made of cotton and not latex. What made me hesitate the most in my purchase is the reviews that said the mattress was too firm. I looked into organic mattress toppers that could help with that, but even those were a small fortune. Finally, I decided to go with this mattress. So glad I did, excellent choice. It is NOT too firm or too hard, it's extremely comfortable. It's possible that they made changes since some of these reviews were posted, to make it less hard. I have a terrible back & hip, and this mattress is comfortable to me. My daughter absolutely melts into it, and sleeps wonderfully! It had zero smell when we opened it - no off gassing, no need to air it out at all. When reading reviews, read the newest ones first. Because I think changes were made to this mattress to make it even better. For us, it's a non-toxic, organic, comfortable, odorless option for a mattress. I really think this one is your best bet!

Great Quality
I was slightly worried about ordering this mattress after reading a couple of reviews stating it was rock hard. I went ahead and ordered it anyway because my daughter has chemical sensitivities, and this was the least expensive, safest option I could find for her. I am happy to report that this mattress, while firm, is indeed comfortable enough- I actually fell asleep while laying with my daughter at bedtime and had a very restful night. My back and hips also felt great when I woke. My daughter slept like a rock and didn't stir until morning. I also noticed that, while I am usually a mouth breather when I sleep, it was very easy for me to breathe through my nose last night. This could be due to the newness of the mattress and the absence of dust mites, but I think the lack of chemicals is probably a contributing factor (I usually start sneezing whenever I walk into a store that sells new furniture because of the off-gassing chemicals). My daughter's nose seemed to stay clear as well. This was a big expenditure for us, but I'm glad we did it because now we have peace of mind that our little girl has a healthy place to sleep until she reaches adulthood. When we can afford it, I'd love to get a Naturepedic for the master bedroom as well.

We used mattress for 6 months - and had to throw it in the garbage
We used mattress for 6 months - but it still had very strong and irritating smell. When we contacted naturepedic - we were told that nothing can be done. We cut the mattress and here is what we foun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvUF5LSzIJo Please watch before you buy!
