Englander

Englander is a mattress brand founded in New York City in 1894. As part of the Southerland mattress family, their mattresses are made in the US and feature foam, latex, and pocket coils. Englander is committed to lowering their carbon-footprint through use of natural latex and recycled steel in some of their mattresses. These mattresses are predominantly found in Southern and Midwest US mattress retail stores. What sets Englander apart is their selection of cooling foams and eco-friendly latex.

Symbol

Symbol mattress company was founded in 1961, focused originally predominantly on commercial mattresses including mattresses for schools and health care facilities. Over the past few years, they have used their commercial backing to release consumer products through retailers in the Midwest, Northeast, and South Eastern U.S. They boast American made fabrics and manufacturing and use certified Certipur-US foam (which is low in volatile organic compounds) on some of their mattresses. Most customers like their mattresses at first, but there are some that experienced issues with durability.

Englander's Owner Satisfaction

Using customer reviews as a guide can be great for discerning shoppers. Customers don't always respond well to these mattresses. Some feel snug and comfortable, but others feel discomfort. If you are pondering buying one, take a look below for more specifics.

Englander's Supportiveness

Some folks feel good with the support in these mattresses, but others have been disappointed with the quality. For those that are of larger body types or require more support for health reasons, do some added research before purchasing.

Edge Support
There are positive and negatives reported about edge support. Some folks have reported good amounts of comfort throughout the mattress, but others had problems with dipping along the sides.

Englander's Durability

Mattresses with lasting comfort are amazing, but not always easy to find. These mattresses are not rated well for their longevity by reviewers. This means that some folks may experience that their mattress lasts a decade, while other customers may have much faster discomfort. If you are a heavier individual, read up on your options because you may be at a higher risk for durability issues from some mattresses.

Symbol's Owner Satisfaction

There is some negative input from sleepers about these mattresses. Some sleepers are happy with the feel, but others have had issues. Due to this, it's harder to predict whether one of these will sleep perfectly for you. Read on to learn more about the specifics to find out if these mattresses will work for you.

Symbol's Supportiveness

Supportive mattresses help align the back properly and help keeping things comfortable for years. Most customers describe these mattresses as having good support, but there are some cases where folks haven't felt 100% supported.

Edge Support
Edge support is a very important factor for those looking for a great mattress and for those that are working on their mobility. These mattresses are competitive when it comes to edge support, but some heavier folks may experience some dips by the edge.

Bowling Ball & Density Tests
Measuring mattress firmness with a bowling ball is a great way to undertand even support. These mattresses provide even support overall, but there may be the rare few that don't experience the same evenness described.

Symbol's Durability

In addition to having good support, having a mattress that really lasts is key for shoppers. We all wish that our mattress would be just as comfortable a decade later as it was the first day. Unfortunately, not all customers regard these mattresses highly overall on durability, and some have had some problems over the short term. If you are considering purchasing as your full time mattress, read through the customer reviews and return policies to make sure that you are secure in your purchase.

Few months in, started sagging
I bought a latex Englander pillow top bed about 6 years ago, in the store it was super comfortable but after I got it (Queen size) and had it for a few months it started sagging. I only weigh 143 and it shouldn't do that. Within a few years it was awful. When it became horrible, I called them and spoke with the customer service team, I sent pictures and documented how bad it was. The bed I had was discontinued, and they actually replaced it with a top of the line pillow top mattress--it was their best model, and probably about an $1800 mattress. I was thrilled, now 6 months into it--I have to turn the thing constantly to avoid the sagging. It is almost as bad as the other one and I completely hate it. I bought a new bed this week. I really wanted it to work out but these are just not great. I can say their customer service was excellent, but I would never recommend these. They aren't cheap and they are so uncomfortable--I can't imagine 2 people on one that weigh more than me.

Started sagging in eight months
We spent $1150+ on an E-gel, cool gel technology Queen, and after about 8 months it started to sag. Englander sent someone over to check the bed and we were told it was 'expected' wear and tear - I'm furious - less than 2 years old - absolutely awful and I am doing everything in my power to spread the word everywhere on the net about this company and their expensive, sagging mattress. :( My $400 mattress was more comfortable after 6 years than this one. I feel bitter about the amount of money and lack of accountability for poor quality, poor durability and crap customer service. Anyone know how to launch a class-action law suit against these clowns?

Bought in the 90s -- still good!
I bought an Englander mattress in December 1996. It was a double-pillow top queen sized mattress with the matching box spring. It is only now that I am thinking of replacing it with a new mattress. I am thinking about a memory foam mattress. This model was the best one that the store carried. For the entire time that I have had the mattress, it was wonderful and very comfortable. The only reason that I am want to replace it, it because of its age. It always had a protective cover on it.

Cheap and good
Just bought a englander capri. Queen size for $396 after tax. So far so good

Best mattress I ever owned
Had a Queen pillowtop for a month now. Absolutely the best Mattress I've ever owned. I saved hundreds of dollars and would recommend The Mattress Outlet and Englander Mattress to anyone that wants a great night's sleep. You do not need to spend thousands to be comfortable. I am completely satisfied with the product.

Love it
We bought a englander back in 05 and have been happy every night since. I feel like I am sleeping on a cloud. Not sure the model but it was about $1200

Worst ever
I bought an Englander Ultimate Visco Pillowtop, expensive, the store went out of business and I am stuck with the worst mattress in the world, it is only two and a half years old and has two holes one on each side and a hump in the middle, pleople learn from my mistake do not buy this mattress.

Biggest ripoff of my life
Do not buy an Englander mattress. The biggest ripoff in my life of 56 years is the Englander mattress. Only 6 months ago we bought one for over $800.00. I have been sleeping in a hole for 3 months now. Tomorrow i will cut it in half and transport the halves to the wholesaler where I will glue them to the sidewalk in front of the store.

Durability -- NONE
Bought this mattress three months ago and it has a giant hole directly in the middle of the mattress. I am not a big person and can't understand how normal sleep would ever cause something like this to happen. I am so disappointed and all I want is a new mattress, but the store said that the sale was final. I was jipped out of hundreds of dollars.

My back aches and the mattress is falling apart
Six months in and I can't even sleep in this bed because the bedding itself has entirely degraded. I am not a sensitive sleeper and would gladly sleep on a couch any day, but this bed has turned into a painful metal mess. I can't do this to myself.

Constant pain and sagging
Bought this bad a year ago and have been in constant pain since 2 weeks in. The shoddy crafstmanship is unbelievable. Buyer beware!!!

Everyone loves it
I purchased my mattress by chance from an store that was going out of business in 2007. To this day everyone that comes to visit brags about the restful night they get. Nothing but snores from the guest bedroom. I brought my second one, replacing my mattress with an Englander, now I have two. I hope my second one last as long as my first one.

I purchased a king sized mattress
I purchased a king sized mattress and box spring January 2014 - from Beds Beds Beds in Crestwood, The mattress is an Englander Mattress OAKVILLE FM is what is on the tag. I emailed Englander Bedding twice and got no answer - I will try calling the company directly later today. The mattress is lumpy my spouse and I weight about 137-150 each so there is no valid reason why the mattress should be lumpy. I don't know if this complaint will do anything but I quite unhappy with the mattress (the box spring appears ok). I keep hearing Englander mattress stands by their product and so far no response. The mattress before we see that it is lumpy in 3 spots is a firm mattress and we both got a good nights sleep.

Englander Geneseo
Mattress has been sagging for 3-4 years now, and it is only 6 years old! I only weigh 135 pounds! Wake up stiff and sore. Just bought a big name competitor's mattress/box springs and guess what -- all my aches and stiffness went away.

Sags in the middle after 4 months
Bought Englander (hampstead model) mattress. I am a smaller than average person and it started sagging in the middle. Every night I end up rolling into the center. Back and hips sore. Contacted customer service twice several months ago and no one ever responded. Will never buy this brand again. I will check the listings from Consumer Reports before I buy another mattress. Thought this would be better because it was a made in USA company.

Horrible Mattress!!
We purchased this mattress after being told this is a "commercial hotel" brand. We knew w/in the 1st week it was not for us. Very hard, most uncomfortable mattress we have ever owned, began to sag after "one" month. I went to the store we purchased from 3 times, I was told by everyone I spoke to "sorry we can't do anything about it" or "you have to call the manufacturer" or "just lay on it more" . The manufacturer sent a bunch of forms to complete but if it did not sag to their "inch" requirement it did not qualify to return. Any sagging that soon is not good, still uncomfortable, we have regretted this purchase of the ENGLANDER mattress & would not suggest you purchase one at all!!

Sagging less than a year!
After only a few months my full size bed began sagging in the middle. It's the Englander Hampstead model. I'm 140lbs, athletic. Now I wake with back & hip pain (combo sleeper- I change positions through the night). Contacted the manufacturer twice with zero response. The box spring is very cheaply made. Horrible waste of money. Now checking reviews before I buy another bed. Will not purchase this brand again. Never had a bed fail in such a short period of time.

Sagging at 5 months. NOT Good
After 5 months from purchase my mattress started getting a depression in the middle of the mattress, AND a big depression on the side of the bed. And which started causing me back issues due to sleeping a bed with defective support.

check your frame
I purchased my first Englander Pillowtop Mattress in 2008. The one I bought, just like many others on this list of reviews was horrible. within the first couple to three months it Started sagging in the middle. I contacted the retailor I purchased it from and they sent out a tech for measurements (a string with 2 weights-one on each end hang over both sides of bed and check depth in middle) and agreed to replace mattress with a new one. Then about two to three months later the same thing with the new mattress-again replaced. When replacing the second mattress, I looked under the box spring to notice that the boards under the box spring were different than customary ones. At this point, I bought a nine leg bed frame instead of the four leg model and the bed has not had this problem again. Check your box spring and maybe consider changing your frame or possible run boards across it for additional support. Hopefully this help some of you..

Englander Brighton Mattress
We bought an Englander Brighton about 18 months ago. It started sagging so we turned it around. Still sagged. Contacted Englander who referred us to the local dealer. Took them pictures and they were great about replacing it with a new one. We have had this one only 3 months and it is sagging as much as the first one. We weigh 150 lbs and 120 lbs. (Not heavy people.) Totally disappointed with the product. Not sure what well do next. Sure won't buy another Englander. The company may be great, but this mattress is terrible.

Lie about warranty
I reached out a week ago for them because I was looking for the warranty for the beat for the mattress I bought nobody reached out sent me an email nothing just completely ignored me until I think that's some professional and I will never buy another one of these again and my bed I got in 2017 so I know there's a 10-year

Worse mattress I have ever bought
after 1 night these mattresses(2 twin xl). the sagging of the mattresses under where we sleep was unbelievable and continues to get worse,. When elevating the head and feet to sit for reading or watching TV the sitting is like sitting on hard board with no cushion. My bones hurt! I called salesman and they sent out their inspection team and they are going to replace. I’m so concerned about this product and will I get the same outcome? Reading some reviews i see.sagging is a problem. I wish I had my old 25 year old-king Serta back. My husband and I are now having problems with aches and back pain. Wise purchase we ever made.

After 35 years, time to replace
We bought our Lady Englander mattress 35 years ago when we were married and never thought about replacing it. When we climb in we always talk about how comfortable it is. However, after 35 years it is definitely starting to sag a bit. But we have certainly gotten our money's worth. Looking to replace with something very similar.

Symbol Mattress
We purchased a Symbol Executive king set approximately 15 yrs ago. It came with a 10 year warranty. We turn it regularly and it remains the most snug, yet firm and comfortable set immaginable. We are now searching for a dealer in our area for a queen set for the guest bedroom.

Finally happy with my bed
I am not generally picky at all about my bed, but my last Tempurpedic mattress was falling apart after the last 8 years and I needed a new one. I went into the local mattress store and noticed the low prices of Symbol. After laying on the bed, I was sold. The only thing I haven't liked is that it is sagging a tiny bit, and it has been just about 5 months. But, so far, definitely comfortable!

Indents and poor quality
After reading the other complaints and answers, I guess I'm basically screwed. My queen size mattress is 3 1/2 yrs old and has indents in it. I've been rotating the mattress every 3 months so now both sides have intents. Also I have never seen a queen size mattress that you could lift with one hand, which leads me to the conclusion that this is a piss poor quality. I will NEVER buy or recommend a Symbol mattress to anyone.

I am on my second mattress set in 4 years...
I am on my second mattress set in 4 years. The current set is about a year old. It is not worth the time and money to get it home. The current set is sagging in the middle. My neck and back are killing me. I am disabled and of course I live on a fixed income. If I could afford to do so I would go purchase a new set by another maker. Then I would drag the Symbol out and burn them. To get them replaced the last time I can not tell you how many phone calls I had to make and how long it actually took for them to replace the set. The warranty is not worth the paper it is written on when the product has to be replaced on a yearly basis. Take my advice do not purchase Symbol Matresses! The local store that sells their products has terrible service as well. After having this product I realize that I over paid. It is not worth more than $150 at most brand new.

It'll Do
Bought a Symbol on clearance from the store down the road for a guest room. No complaints, but no cheers either. Guess I can't complain.

I LOVE MY BED
I've had a Symbol for 10 years. Love it every night. I've seen that the newer models, you can't flip. But, mine you can! Get your hands on an older model and you'll be dreaming zzz's until cows come home.

After just few months...
After just few months of owning this matters it started to sink in the middle. Now 2 years later the matress says more than the two inches required for replacement, but Symbol will not honor the replacement. 3 out of 4 of the foam walls supporting the outer edge of the matress have caved outward, giving my matress an off trapazoid shape. It is uncomfortable and after a mere two years I am told that my matress is clearly faulty but unreplacable. I do not recommend buying a Symbol matress unless you keep in inside of a wooden frame to keep the sides from collapsing. This was an awful experience.

This mattress didn't even last me 4 years! I just had to replace mine, I will never buy another mattress from your company again!! $800 down the drain

Worst Matress Ever
Had a friend talk us into this brand. Decided to give it a try. In lLess than a year and a half.. the center was wore out with the recommended rotations (every couple weeks) and using the box spring recommended for it. They replaced the mattress after filing a complaint. Now.. a year and a half later.. same exact issue. Poor quality, poor function. and poor sleep because of it. Will NEVER buy from this company again. We'd give it 0 stars if we could!

I have a queen...
I have a queen “soft, plush” set in my guest room. My 86 yr old Dad and his wife slept on it and said “it was their best sleep ever” and are looking to purchase the same set, closer to home in Maine

Great Quality Mattress...
Great Quality Mattress Sets! USA Made Since 1961! Definitely Best Quality at Best Prices in the Industry!

I purchased 2...
I purchased 2 "comfort innovations - Edison" mattresses a few years ago. After ONE summer of use (3 months), massive divots formed in the middle of both mattresses. When I say massive, I mean to the point of not being able to sleep comfortably because you could feel the frame underneath you through the mattress, and felt trapped by the sides of the divot. Attempts to contact the company were ridiculous. We called them multiple times and they never bothered to call us back. Horrible customer service! Do not bother to purchase mattresses from them unless you like sleeping in a mattress ravine.

I have one of the more affordable units...
I have one of the more affordable units, the Belair, now discontinued. I also sell these beds. They are a fantastic mattress for the price. Very comparable to any name brand.

I thought I was buying a great mattress...
I thought I was buying a great mattress for my 10 year old when we purchased the Signature MCS Series. $$$$$ Turns out the quality is terrible! The mattress started to dip with a few weeks. My son is 72 lbs and nearly 5 ft tall. There is absolutely no reason why this mattress should be developing a dip in it. The sales rep told my dealer that body impressions aren't warranted!! Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable! If your mattress can't support 72lbs spread out over nearly 5 ft., what would happen if this mattress would have been used by an adult! Terribly disappointed.

Local dealer does not honor anymore...
Local dealer does not honor anymore. Replaced 3 times in three years. Their mattress, their box support and a standard queen frame. Same areas break down every time from a 5’5 120 lb user. Now I must deal directly with mfg. and supply photos and get someone to help me move both pieces around.

Excellent company!
Excellent company!! been selling their mattresses for 8 years..they 100% stand behind their product!!Great quality for less, as they don't advertise. Fantastic selection, great value! Don't believe the nay sayers...it's just not true!!

Products may be great...
Products may be great But, support / Warranty is a big disappointment

I purchased a mattress here...
I purchased a mattress here and a few years and it is the best mattress I have owned, still holding up good and comfortable every night I sleep on it, no complaints. I have recommended my friends and family to come here as well because I was so happy with my purchase.

Worst mattress ever.
Worst mattress ever. Only had a year and it sagged terribly in the middle! Hardly ever used. Been trying to get a refund but they want to exchange it! I don't want another one of their mattresses! Terrible.

Worst custoemr service ever.
Worst custoemr service ever. Bought a bed there and it was so uncomfortable. They exchanged it the first time but the second mattress was just as bad. When we contacted customer service they said their 15 yr warrenty only allows 1 exchange. Never again.

Junk
I don't even want to give them one star. Symbol is a terrible mattress and they don't back up their warranty. Our first mattress had huge divots in it so they angrily replaced it. The second mattress was just as bad after 2 days we got these huge sink holes but the 10 yr warranty is only good on the first mattress. This company sucks because they brag about quality and service but its anything but.

Beware of the online retailer scam - Two stars for a bad sales practice
I purchased my H219187 Northern Nights Queen 11" Dream Hybrid Mattress AKA "Symbol" Mattress just a few days ago. Well, it came today alongside the warranty card and instructions, I unboxed the mattress but did not remove the plastic from the rolled mattress. As I began reading the warranty pamphlet I find that the warranty is only valid if you buy the matching box spring. Well, the Box spring was not an option when we purchased the mattress. Furthermore, The warranty was a major reason for buying the mattress (10 years). Also, I was expecting a high-quality Nothern Nights mattress and not a "Symbol" low-end mattress? I told the online retailer that at no time did the TV saleswomen mention the need for the boxspring to get the 10-year warranty. They did, however, continue to mention the 10-year replacement warranty. So, I asked for a full refund and got it. To my surprise, they told me to trash, donate or give the mattress away as they do not take them back. How cheap is this product? What a bad sales process for a well-known tv retailer. Now, I have a no win situation if the mattress sticks and I no longer have my old mattress I'm screwed? A bad case of bait and switch if you ask me. Now I'm looking for someone that needs a mattress and is not discriminant. It's free but now it's my problem to solve?

Makes me sad...
I purchased a Symbol Jasmine 1 year and 5 months ago. Sinking in the middle badly I was able to return by warranty to my delight(I am 5-7 170lbs. What was delivered as a replacement was a Symbol Shelton. Much thinner, and way less build quality than the Jasmine, which is no longer in production. Let down in my experience.

Not what I expected
We have had this Symbol Belle Terre mattress for about 30 days not and it is not at all like what we layed on in the store. It has permanent depressions almost 2" deep after only 30 days.

MISERY!!!
I’m renting this place away from home for out of town work, that is a furnished 1 bedroom. To the point. The Mattress is from Hell itself no rest from this thing at all. I’d sleep beter in a rock river bed . I’m more exhausted from trying to sleep on this than being at work itself. So I looked at the tag for the manufacturer to see it is a symbol, aloe Vera made in 12/2019 in Richmond va. It is JUNK- wont even waist the time talking to owners of the place, But this Crap has got to GO! I'll buy my own mattress ,they can have it back when I’m gone. This outfit is ripping off America!!

Caves in the middle
Nice outside look, but inner construction not there. Caved in the middle after the first year

Symbol Mattress Comfortec
We purchased our box spring and mattress only 4 years ago. What a disappointment!!! It was great at first but quickly went down hill as far as comfort and the sagging is just unforgivable, We are now looking for a new mattress. Don't waste your time or money.

Don’t buy
I bought my saatva “luxury” mattress about 9 years ago. I tried to get a hold of the company to return the mattress after about 3 months but couldn’t contact the company. They’re were so nice when I bought the mattress but not after purchase was final. The mattress started sagging in the middle after a couple of months and is still the same today. I will never buy a mattress online again as there is just no recourse.

Amazing Mattresses at Amazing Price Points
As long as you have the proper support for a mattress (as is the same for any company you buy a mattress from) they will never have any problem warranting your mattress (so long as there's no stains). That being said, their mattresses simply do not have defects or issues. The only thing that causes issues is inadequate support (which will happen with any mattress you buy)

Good at first, didn't last long. Now it's horrible.
Bought a Symbol Mattress and foundation at the end of 2019. It was very comfortable at first, but within 6 months it had started sagging in the center, even though we rotated the bed every two weeks. Then it continued to get worse. However, the mattress won't be replaced, as the depression is not 2" deep. Not yet. But it's close, and I wake up every morning with a sore back and neck. It wasn't exactly cheap, either. But at less than 3 years old, I am going to replace it. If you're looking for a new mattress, skip Symbol. You will be better off with the cheapest box chain store brand.

$800 mattress
well, after reading all the reviews its obvious the symbol mattress i purchased is a pile of poor quality junk. it sinks in the middle after less than a year. i find it odd that some the 5 star reviews try to contradict the real problem. like ive had my symbol mattress for 15 years and love it! sounds like an in house review to me. the company i bought from asked me after i called about the sag if i rotated the mattress every week. every week! i said no i havent. he asked if i would strip the bed and take pix. even suggested i run a line over the sag, lol. the owner called me back and told me to come in and pick out another more firm mattress. well its under warranty so i think ill just get another mattress and wait for it to sag and swap that one out as well.

Lump in mattress
I purchased the symbol classic comfort mattress from Vt bedrooms on 2/28/2022. Within 2 weeks I saw a lump in the mattress. vet bedrooms said there is no returns because of the pandemic. I have taken pics of this huge lump in my bed but don’t know how or if I can download them. I paid $900.00 for a mattress that I will have to throw out! What kind of company does not stand behind their product! I’m very unsatisfied & will never purchase another Symbol mattress again!!!

Doesn't last
Had Mattress for three years. Liked it at first but as time wore on it got really soft to the point today where I can put my knee on it and sink right to the bottom. It's like a thick piece of foam rubber. My back has been screaming at me. Back to the mattress store.
