Englander

Englander is a mattress brand founded in New York City in 1894. As part of the Southerland mattress family, their mattresses are made in the US and feature foam, latex, and pocket coils. Englander is committed to lowering their carbon-footprint through use of natural latex and recycled steel in some of their mattresses. These mattresses are predominantly found in Southern and Midwest US mattress retail stores. What sets Englander apart is their selection of cooling foams and eco-friendly latex.

Spring Air

Founded in 1926, Spring Air is a classic and traditional bed maker. With 8 US based factories and more worldwide, this large mattress manufacturer creates hybrid and innerspring mattresses available under a few different brands including Chattam & Wells, Four Seasons, and Back Supporter. Spring Air mattresses are available at retail stores nationwide. Still, some customers have brought up issues with firmness and durability.

Englander's Owner Satisfaction

Customer reviews are sometimes hard to make sense of -- especially with some companies focusing heavily on protecting their reputation. These mattresses, sadly, don't get the highest reception from sleepers. There are still sleepers who are perfectly cozy with these products, but others that are not as much. Read on below to get the details on the specifics.

Englander's Supportiveness

Some of the customers don't feel that the mattresses support them well enough. Though some enjoy the quality of these mattresses, if you have wide hips and shoulders, do some added research before buying.

Edge Support
For those that are looking for long-term edge support, some reviewers report that these mattresses may not have the kind of edge support over the long term that you may need.

Englander's Durability

Getting a long-lasting mattress is awesome, and when instead we get a mattress that hurts our backs after a couple months, we feel awful. However, it is getting more and more difficult to find a durable mattress nowadays. With more companies than ever, companies fighting for profit at the demise of quality. In terms of these mattresses, some sleepers report durability concerns. Not all customers will experience durability issues, but make sure to review the return and warranty policies before buying.

Spring Air's Owner Satisfaction

Figuring out the takeaways from customers can be a great eye-opener for shoppers. Customers, sadly, don't always have positive remarks about these mattresses. Some are happy with the feel and comfort of their mattress, but others complain about how it feels for them. If you are considering buying, there are more details about mattress specifics below.

Spring Air's Supportiveness

Support in mattresses is deeply important to spine health and deep sleep. If your bed doesn't prop you up, you simply won't sleep as well as those that have a mattress that aligns the spine. These mattresses offered good support at first, but some had issues with comfort over the long term.

Edge Support
Most customers find these mattresses to have good edge support, which is welcomed for those that like to sit on the side of the bed. Some that are larger may still experience sagging near the edges.

Spring Air's Durability

Unfortunately, not everyone rates thair mattresses well in terms of longevity. While some have experienced good performance, others found that quicker break down than others. If you are considering, make sure to read more reviews and go over the return policies before you buy.

Few months in, started sagging
I bought a latex Englander pillow top bed about 6 years ago, in the store it was super comfortable but after I got it (Queen size) and had it for a few months it started sagging. I only weigh 143 and it shouldn't do that. Within a few years it was awful. When it became horrible, I called them and spoke with the customer service team, I sent pictures and documented how bad it was. The bed I had was discontinued, and they actually replaced it with a top of the line pillow top mattress--it was their best model, and probably about an $1800 mattress. I was thrilled, now 6 months into it--I have to turn the thing constantly to avoid the sagging. It is almost as bad as the other one and I completely hate it. I bought a new bed this week. I really wanted it to work out but these are just not great. I can say their customer service was excellent, but I would never recommend these. They aren't cheap and they are so uncomfortable--I can't imagine 2 people on one that weigh more than me.

Started sagging in eight months
We spent $1150+ on an E-gel, cool gel technology Queen, and after about 8 months it started to sag. Englander sent someone over to check the bed and we were told it was 'expected' wear and tear - I'm furious - less than 2 years old - absolutely awful and I am doing everything in my power to spread the word everywhere on the net about this company and their expensive, sagging mattress. :( My $400 mattress was more comfortable after 6 years than this one. I feel bitter about the amount of money and lack of accountability for poor quality, poor durability and crap customer service. Anyone know how to launch a class-action law suit against these clowns?

Bought in the 90s -- still good!
I bought an Englander mattress in December 1996. It was a double-pillow top queen sized mattress with the matching box spring. It is only now that I am thinking of replacing it with a new mattress. I am thinking about a memory foam mattress. This model was the best one that the store carried. For the entire time that I have had the mattress, it was wonderful and very comfortable. The only reason that I am want to replace it, it because of its age. It always had a protective cover on it.

Cheap and good
Just bought a englander capri. Queen size for $396 after tax. So far so good

Best mattress I ever owned
Had a Queen pillowtop for a month now. Absolutely the best Mattress I've ever owned. I saved hundreds of dollars and would recommend The Mattress Outlet and Englander Mattress to anyone that wants a great night's sleep. You do not need to spend thousands to be comfortable. I am completely satisfied with the product.

Love it
We bought a englander back in 05 and have been happy every night since. I feel like I am sleeping on a cloud. Not sure the model but it was about $1200

Worst ever
I bought an Englander Ultimate Visco Pillowtop, expensive, the store went out of business and I am stuck with the worst mattress in the world, it is only two and a half years old and has two holes one on each side and a hump in the middle, pleople learn from my mistake do not buy this mattress.

Biggest ripoff of my life
Do not buy an Englander mattress. The biggest ripoff in my life of 56 years is the Englander mattress. Only 6 months ago we bought one for over $800.00. I have been sleeping in a hole for 3 months now. Tomorrow i will cut it in half and transport the halves to the wholesaler where I will glue them to the sidewalk in front of the store.

Durability -- NONE
Bought this mattress three months ago and it has a giant hole directly in the middle of the mattress. I am not a big person and can't understand how normal sleep would ever cause something like this to happen. I am so disappointed and all I want is a new mattress, but the store said that the sale was final. I was jipped out of hundreds of dollars.

My back aches and the mattress is falling apart
Six months in and I can't even sleep in this bed because the bedding itself has entirely degraded. I am not a sensitive sleeper and would gladly sleep on a couch any day, but this bed has turned into a painful metal mess. I can't do this to myself.

Constant pain and sagging
Bought this bad a year ago and have been in constant pain since 2 weeks in. The shoddy crafstmanship is unbelievable. Buyer beware!!!

Everyone loves it
I purchased my mattress by chance from an store that was going out of business in 2007. To this day everyone that comes to visit brags about the restful night they get. Nothing but snores from the guest bedroom. I brought my second one, replacing my mattress with an Englander, now I have two. I hope my second one last as long as my first one.

I purchased a king sized mattress
I purchased a king sized mattress and box spring January 2014 - from Beds Beds Beds in Crestwood, The mattress is an Englander Mattress OAKVILLE FM is what is on the tag. I emailed Englander Bedding twice and got no answer - I will try calling the company directly later today. The mattress is lumpy my spouse and I weight about 137-150 each so there is no valid reason why the mattress should be lumpy. I don't know if this complaint will do anything but I quite unhappy with the mattress (the box spring appears ok). I keep hearing Englander mattress stands by their product and so far no response. The mattress before we see that it is lumpy in 3 spots is a firm mattress and we both got a good nights sleep.

Englander Geneseo
Mattress has been sagging for 3-4 years now, and it is only 6 years old! I only weigh 135 pounds! Wake up stiff and sore. Just bought a big name competitor's mattress/box springs and guess what -- all my aches and stiffness went away.

Sags in the middle after 4 months
Bought Englander (hampstead model) mattress. I am a smaller than average person and it started sagging in the middle. Every night I end up rolling into the center. Back and hips sore. Contacted customer service twice several months ago and no one ever responded. Will never buy this brand again. I will check the listings from Consumer Reports before I buy another mattress. Thought this would be better because it was a made in USA company.

Horrible Mattress!!
We purchased this mattress after being told this is a "commercial hotel" brand. We knew w/in the 1st week it was not for us. Very hard, most uncomfortable mattress we have ever owned, began to sag after "one" month. I went to the store we purchased from 3 times, I was told by everyone I spoke to "sorry we can't do anything about it" or "you have to call the manufacturer" or "just lay on it more" . The manufacturer sent a bunch of forms to complete but if it did not sag to their "inch" requirement it did not qualify to return. Any sagging that soon is not good, still uncomfortable, we have regretted this purchase of the ENGLANDER mattress & would not suggest you purchase one at all!!

Sagging less than a year!
After only a few months my full size bed began sagging in the middle. It's the Englander Hampstead model. I'm 140lbs, athletic. Now I wake with back & hip pain (combo sleeper- I change positions through the night). Contacted the manufacturer twice with zero response. The box spring is very cheaply made. Horrible waste of money. Now checking reviews before I buy another bed. Will not purchase this brand again. Never had a bed fail in such a short period of time.

Sagging at 5 months. NOT Good
After 5 months from purchase my mattress started getting a depression in the middle of the mattress, AND a big depression on the side of the bed. And which started causing me back issues due to sleeping a bed with defective support.

check your frame
I purchased my first Englander Pillowtop Mattress in 2008. The one I bought, just like many others on this list of reviews was horrible. within the first couple to three months it Started sagging in the middle. I contacted the retailor I purchased it from and they sent out a tech for measurements (a string with 2 weights-one on each end hang over both sides of bed and check depth in middle) and agreed to replace mattress with a new one. Then about two to three months later the same thing with the new mattress-again replaced. When replacing the second mattress, I looked under the box spring to notice that the boards under the box spring were different than customary ones. At this point, I bought a nine leg bed frame instead of the four leg model and the bed has not had this problem again. Check your box spring and maybe consider changing your frame or possible run boards across it for additional support. Hopefully this help some of you..

Englander Brighton Mattress
We bought an Englander Brighton about 18 months ago. It started sagging so we turned it around. Still sagged. Contacted Englander who referred us to the local dealer. Took them pictures and they were great about replacing it with a new one. We have had this one only 3 months and it is sagging as much as the first one. We weigh 150 lbs and 120 lbs. (Not heavy people.) Totally disappointed with the product. Not sure what well do next. Sure won't buy another Englander. The company may be great, but this mattress is terrible.

Lie about warranty
I reached out a week ago for them because I was looking for the warranty for the beat for the mattress I bought nobody reached out sent me an email nothing just completely ignored me until I think that's some professional and I will never buy another one of these again and my bed I got in 2017 so I know there's a 10-year

Worse mattress I have ever bought
after 1 night these mattresses(2 twin xl). the sagging of the mattresses under where we sleep was unbelievable and continues to get worse,. When elevating the head and feet to sit for reading or watching TV the sitting is like sitting on hard board with no cushion. My bones hurt! I called salesman and they sent out their inspection team and they are going to replace. I’m so concerned about this product and will I get the same outcome? Reading some reviews i see.sagging is a problem. I wish I had my old 25 year old-king Serta back. My husband and I are now having problems with aches and back pain. Wise purchase we ever made.

After 35 years, time to replace
We bought our Lady Englander mattress 35 years ago when we were married and never thought about replacing it. When we climb in we always talk about how comfortable it is. However, after 35 years it is definitely starting to sag a bit. But we have certainly gotten our money's worth. Looking to replace with something very similar.

What a great bed
This bed was delivered by two men from 'manna delivery' services, they did a good job and took away all of the boxing and giant bags. It is a little taller than i thought but its not too tall for my sheets which is good. It feels a lot different than my old memory foam bed and when I called they explained what latex foam was and really opened my eyes. My back pain has gone away and also i sleep better throughout the night. i would buy this bed again

Not a good quality mattress
Tried to like this matress but it's just a poor product. Weak sides making you feel like you're sliding off edge. Hump formed in middle after a few weeks. Valleys on the sides. Almost impossible to rotate due to lack of handles / straps to hold on to. Even tried to flip it over and all the problems come back on both sides.

Like a rug on a cold floor
We like a firm mattress but this is hard and uncomfortable. Harder than the sliding diagram indicates. My husband and I had back, hip and shoulder pain after the first night. Returning it asap.

Disappointed with mattress
After seeing the bed in Costco and feeling how cool the foam was, i was convinced it was a good buy .....but....when foam is covered with fabric, then a protective pad then a sheet the bed was just as hot as my last memory foam bed and after 3 months, it is starting to get indentations in it even though we rotated it several times. I will return it to Costco.

Tried to love it but disappointed after 9 months
Believe the reviews this mattress is firm! We've had it for about 9 months and still can't get comfortable. The sides have depressions while the middle has a hump. We have rotated the bed as instructed but still does not help. My wife and I aren't big people, and we both have back aches from this mattress. We gave it a try, but unfortunately have not had a good nights sleep. We are going to return it and get something softer.

Comfortable
I have purchased 3 spring Air beds in the past, so did not hesitate to order online. Delivery was very efficient and on time even though I live 175 miles from the nearest Costco. This mattress is very comfortable from day one.

Keeps you cool. Had this for 8 months still like
The Latex is great for hot sleepers! This bed does not make me sweat like memory foam or any of pillow tops. I never ever feel hot. It is a firmer plush if that makes sense. It will soften up after about 3-4 weeks. I originally bought the Ultra Firm model but I could not take that slab of concrete and had to return it for this one. It is definitely soft on the sides and firm in the middle. If I were single I'd sleep in the middle to make the bed even. With the firmer middle it is harder to roll over and my wife doesn't try to sneak over to cuddle and steal my heat. I tried 7 other mattress's foam/spring/spring infused latex with foam tops I thought I was going to go crazy, until I found this model. I was desperate for a King size, medium firm, cool bed for $1500ish.

great mattress
great mattress. firm and had good nights sleep from day one. the delivery service was efficient and courteous. they arrived in the time frame that was give and took away all cartons and papers. would recommend this product .

Disappointing quality
The consistency of the foam is uneven, hard in middle too soft on sides. Makes you feel like your tilting towards outer edge when laying on back. Seems also to have broke down to a lumpy feel after six months use. Very difficult to change positions as it leaves you feeling like your trying to roll out of a hole. Made my good back hurt. Can't sleep on this mattress any longer, returning.

great choice
There was an error in shipping by delivering the wrong foundation, so we had to use our old one, which made the mattress seem soft, but still very comfortable. After using the correct foundation there was a distinct improvement in the firmness, this is the best i have slept in along time especially having physical issues.I recommend you use the right foundation. We are very happy with this, also read the rotating instructions.

Soft as a cloud with NO support
Way too soft! You sink right in and it's comfortable at first. But when I wake in the morning I have a terrible lower back ache due to lack of support. I'm a side sleeper and this mattress does not have proper support to keep my spine aligned. This is suppose to be a Latex bed, so I don't know why they add junkie memory foam to the top layer which only makes it hotter and does not breath, completely defeating the advantages of Latex breath-ability and cool sleeping surface.

Firm - Not 'Plush'
When I saw this mattress advertised as plush I figured it would be very soft. That is not the case. This mattress is quite firm. It is probably fine for a back sleeper, but I sleep on my side and it's terrible. After the 3rd night I couldn't take any more and put an old memory foam topper on it. As soon as the replacement mattress arrives this one will be heading back to the warehouse.

Sorry , not happy at all
I was especially interested in getting away from springs and trying the Latex. Unfortuneately, it was a big dissapointment. It seened lifeless, like sleeping on a bag of soft beans. It definitely was not like a cloud. The positive reviews on a similar Spring Aire latex matress are astonishing to me

I love this bed!
I have to say, I was a little hesitant on purchasing this after reading the last review but I must say this was one of the best desicions I have made in a long time. This mattress is sooo cushiony and comfortable. For the first time in a long time, my husband and I have actually been sleeping through the night!

Excellent Bed
We have had this bed for about a month. From the first night, neither my husband or I wake up with sore/stiff backs. We bought our previous bed from Costco and were hesitant thinking we should go to a mattress store. We are so glad we went with this bed. I prefer a softer bed and my husband prefers a firmer bed. While this bed is firmer than I expected, it doesn't effect the sleep we are getting. We also didn't notice a smell. The manufacturer said to let the bed air out but we didn't need to. Hopefully this will continue to be a great bed! We have struggled over the years, trying less expensive options. This is worth every penny.

Good nights, happy days!
We were on the hunt for a good mattress, but did not want memory foam. The options are limited. After doing some research we ordered the Spring Air Firm mattress. It was too hard. I contacted Costco.com they arranged for pickup (free) of the other mattress and provided a refund. We then chose this mattress. It is still firm, but not hard. Its supportive and comfortable. Shipping was included in the price from Costco.com, and we had no issues with setting it up. My husband is also very pleased with it.

Stone
One word: stone. This bed is soooooo hard and not plush at all. I'm a loyal Costco shopper, but this product is a total fail. It will be going back for sure.

Not what you expect
For over 50 years I have slept on Beauty Rest two sided Cal King mattresses. Beauty Rest, like so many other manufacturers, stopped making two sided or flippable mattresses. Spring Air is listed as one of the few still making these mattresses and based on the reviews I decided to order one. The order was for an Extra Firm mattress which was placed in early March, manufactured on March 30th and finally delivered on April 23rd. Looking forward to a great nights sleep we placed a freshly washed cotton mattress cover on the new mattress along with fresh sheets and a blanket. The first thing that we both noticed was that the edge of the bed sagged when sat on and no we are not obesely over weight. I am 230 and my wife is 160 pounds. Our old mattress did not sag like this. The next problem we found that when either of us turned to a different sleeping position the whole mattress seemed to jiggle and disturb the other sleeper. Again our old mattress did not do this. My wife also felt that the tuft cover finish on both sides of the mattress felt lumpy. In the morning we discussed these issues and decided to put the old mattress back on the foundation and order a custom made mattress from a local mattress maker. I will try to sell this mattress and at a great loss. This has been a waste of time and money and was over all a bad experience. Do not buy this mattress until you can actually sit on it and lay down on it. We didn't have that option.

Spring Air
I bought a Spring Air from Sears in 1996 which I am still using without a problem, and it looks brand new underneath the mattress pad. I just think I might get this same brand, if possible, since after this many years I see that it has more than twice outlived the usual lifespan of a mattress.

Comfortable as long as no one is moving.
Feel the movement of others too much. Mattress is comfy.

hip and shoulder pain
advised to get this mattress for side sleepers with hip and shoulder pain. It did not improve my pain as i had hoped. I had to further purchase a mattress topper separately which did help to decrease my discomfort.

***Avoid at all costs!!! Can't last a year before it has 5+ inch divets. Thats on two different mattresses!***
I have had the displeasure of owning two different Spring Air mattresses. The first one was turned into my local furniture store for warranty after only a year and 3 months with 5+ inch divots. I'm not a large person at 6'4" 200lbs. There is no excuse for this poor quality on two separate mattresses. My retail furniture shop stopped carrying them from what I can only assume is liability and the fact they are more hassle than they are worth. So now Spring Air expects me to load up the mattress in a truck and drive 7 hours just so they can repair/replace it. They don't really stand by their warranty.

avoid buying this product
warranty means nothing have a almost 2in.impression and it does not qualify for replacement also do not shop at Metro Matteress they scam you too

WARNING Buy at your own risk
I got one a week ago made by spring air, I slept on it the first night, got so sick in the middle of the night from the fumes. It emits VOC fumes from the foam they make. They wont do anything except offer for me to take it to Springfield Il or place I bought it from and get another one of the chemical hazards. I said I will not and I will check my options, and I am doing just that. I'm trying to be nice but they weren't willing to do anyhting. I had a mess of last week trying to sleep on a couch at 77 years old
