Cocoon by Sealy is Sealy's answer to the disruptive mattress in a box brands that have been so popular over the past two years. They offer two mattresses, both a variety of memory foams, a 'Chill' version and a regular version with a soft and a firm version. Through their massive brand awareness and mattress industry connections, it is no doubt that some of the disrupters are concerned about their mattress in a box entry.
Casper has been making waves in the mattress industry for the past few years. They claim to offer the perfect mattress for everyone after doing rigorous consumer tests on their prototypes. But what do other people say?
Based on our aggregated reviews and our scoring method, we recommend Cocoon in this match up!

At first, I was skeptical about memory foam. We have been using a pillow top mattress for years, and seldom used anything else. Me and my husband have consequently been suffering from back pain for years, and realized a change was long overdue. When we received the mattress, it was rolled up and vacuum sealed in a box, so my first impression was that it would be too thin to fit our bed. But, after removing the plastic wrap and waiting not even 10 minutes, it expanded tremendously, and was very entertaining for my children. I initially thought that the mattress would be too soft for us, but the bed contains just enough firmness to be comfortable, yet just enough softness to create envy from my family whenever they sit on it (which is very often!). After the first week in years with much less back pains and a full nights sleep, we knew that we'd never look back. This is a mattress that pays for itself, and a purchase that will not be wished away. I highly recommend Cocoon by Sealy. 5 stars all around!View More Reviews
I was a bit skeptical about the new Cocoon mattress. However, my initial impression changed when we started unpacking the mattress. First, it was very easy to unpack and set-up. It's compact and slid out of the box easily and was easy to unroll onto the box spring. It took a minute to find out where to rip the plastic exterior bag but once we did that we were in business. It was much easier to get out of the bag and into place than the previous mattresses; it just isn't as bulky or doesn't seem as heavy as traditional mattresses. The mattress is a bit thinner than our previous mattress but I haven't found that to matter. I don't think it really requires the extra deep sheets to cover it even though that is what we used on it. I prefer a bit of a softer mattress and my husband prefers the opposite. However, I find sometimes with soft mattresses that they are too soft to the point where if you are on the edge of the bed, you feel like the mattress will collapse. In this case, I ordered the soft mattress hoping it would work out and have been very happy with it. The top of the mattress is like memory foam which makes it fit my need for a soft mattress but the under part is firmer which gives the support of a firm mattress and makes the mattress feel seem more stable. I'm not sure how this will last long term but for now it is quite nice. The mattress incredibly comfortable to sleep on and I have found that I can't feel the other person if they roll around in the bed. This isn't always something I have experienced with other mattresses and so have really appreciated that quiet feeling. Overall, this mattress has made for some great sleeping and I would definitely purchase it for other bedrooms in our house.
I'm used to big, bulky mattresses. The Cocoon is much lighter. I used to sleep on a pillow top. The Cocoon is even softer. I feel so cradled in it.
I like the mattress. I feel great in the morning but I prefer more firmer than the current one. Sealy made good mattresses for over decades. The texture and the thickness makes you feel comfortable when you sleep. I would recommend for anyone who's looking to sleep tight at night. If you are super heavy person this mattress is not for you.
The only thing that I would say is that the soft mattress is really a medium. I would have preferred an actual soft mattress, but this one isn't a bad mattress and we are sleeping much better on this new mattress than our old one.
Nice and comfortable- came on time and setup easily
It's pretty nice.
I like the idea of the bed in a box. I was very excited about trying the Sealy Cocoon Mattress. The box was extremely heavy, but it was well packed and easy to set up. The bed is surprisingly soft and comfortable.
I've been sleeping on my new mattress for a week. I purchased a firm mattress and can feel a wonderful difference in my body. I suffer from low back and hip pain. I've woken up each morning pain free. Two thumbs up!! I want to purchase a second one for my daughter so I'm hoping Sealy will offer me a returning customer discount.
WE GOT THE FIRM MATTRESS AND WERE A LITTLE SKEPTICAL BECAUSE IT WAS A LITTLE SOFT ON TOP...BUT WE WERE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED....VERY COMFORTABLE.....WE LOVE IT !
I've been sleeping on my new Cocoon mattress, and I think its been helping me sleep better than I have in a long time! The mattress came in a box and seemed very 'small' at first glance. Once we opened the box up onto our bed, it expanded into a full size mattress within a few minutes. The first night the mattress was way too firm for our liking, but I realize that mattresses (memory foam in general) need to be broken in. After a couple of days of sleeping on the Cocoon, I've been sleeping harder, and with much less movement than I normally do. I also can feel the movement of my sleeping partner significantly less than my previous, non- memory foam mattress. I haven't noticed being particularly cool or warm while sleeping yet, but my husband has mentioned that he felt it was cool for a foam mattress. All of this has definitely helped me sleep very well since I got it!
I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5, because the depth of the mattress is a bit more thin than I prefer. Now my nightstands seem too high! Also, I like to read in bed and it still seems a bit firm to really do that comfortably, but that might change with some more time. Other than that, so far, we like it more than our old mattress!
It was amazing to think a mattress could form from the pad that was mailed to us! As we cut the plastic away the foam raised up to form a bed. That got everyone in the household excited. The concept is great. We are used to sleeping on a regular spring mattress with a thick 3-4 inch foam pad on top. The Cocoon, at first, was hard and took some time to get used to. We have only slept on it for a week and the paperwork that comes with the bed says to give it 100 days. I am starting to like it. The Cocoon seems to form into your badyshape and actually support you. My husband sweats alot during his sleep and usually always has to kick the blackets off during the night, he says that since we have been sleeping on the Cocoon, he is more comfortable tempurature wise. What is also nice is that not being a spring matress it does not move as much when your sleeping partner moves or gets up. My Husband and I have different schedules, so this helps tremendously, so we are both not bothered when the other gets up. This is by no means a luxouriuos mattress, but it is starting to grow on us.
So far so good!View More Reviews
Horrible mattress, great marketing. My back hurt for the entire three weeks we had it, I contacted casper and they told me to give it two to three months before it would feel comfortable! Whatever you do DO NOT BUY THROUGH AMAZON. Casper will not honor trial period or warranty if you purchase through amazon. And shipping back is a NIGHTMARE, it took two large guys and my wife to get it back in a box that ups will accept. When I contacted casper
no more lower back issues!
Bad smell and very extra firm. Would not recommend purchasing thru amazon if unsure if it will work for you.
Been great so far!
This was a carefully chosen purchase, and we have not regretted it at all. It's perfect for both of us.
Never slept better. I was always sore after sleeping on my previous mattress and the Casper made it all better.
Have had this mattress for four months now and we love it.
Very comfortable. No more sore back in the morning.
Oh my god the most comfortable bed I have ever had. Seriously, this bed is no joke! I am absolutely satisfied!!!
I have only had this mattress for a week but I must say, wow. It is SO comfortable. I sleep on it by myself so I can't speak how it is with two but I can say it is absolutely the best matress I've slept on. It was super easy to take out of the package and unravel. Every morning I struggle to get out of it because it's so nice.
By far the most comfortable mattress I've ever had!
Have had it for 45 days and love it. Not hot at all
You will not regret buying this mattress
This was an amazing buy. We have both a temperpedic and a sleep number. We bought this for our son and now are so jealous. We like it better than any of the others.
guest bed mattress, guests love it
It's smaller than my previous queen size mattress so the box I have is bigger but other than that it's the most comfortable mattress I've ever had 😍👌🏼
This is absolutely hands down the best mattress I have ever slept on1 I rate the whole experience 10 star because of the ease in which it is delivered and handled by me alone. I am in heaven while sleeping on this bed and tell everyone I meet about its perfection!
Simply the best. Don't bother looking at any other foam mattress. The cheaper Chinese ones don't even compare, and it beats out everything in price above it as well.
Takes getting used to when coming from a traditional mattress. You don't sink in as much.
THE BEST. And really fun to open!
I have never gotten such a deep sleep until it bought this. It is crazy. Get it.
I have had this mattress for 2 months. It is much different than my spring mattress and very comfortable
It is a well made product for very little cost.
We're very happy with it. Very comfortable.
Very comfortable. Well made. Would recommend
The sweet spot. Firm but still supportive. Will let you know how it holds up. You can use this referral to save 50 clams if you decide to get one too!
Few Months later the bed holds fine. No signs of dips or soft spots. Definitely get a spill cover.
The code below has been updated and you will receive 50$ off your order:
It is wonderful, 1 little glitch in hanging it, user error...
This is the first review I've ever written on Amazon.
I'm the type of a person who rarely get mad... always try to look at the brighter side of life.
If I get a broken item, I simply return it. if my order gets delayed, I would first wait then email the seller. I don't complain. S*** happens.
But this. This is unacceptable.
I just moved into my new apartment, assembled all the furnitutures with my wife and saved my our last fun for the infamouse Casper bed.
As we are unboxing and unwrapping, my wife pointed out that the bed seems too small.
We found out what we got was a queen size bed instead of a king.
Is this some kind of a joke? Not only I paid way more for the wrong size bed, I don't even know how I am supposed to ship this back for a return.
THE WORST. How hard is it to check the right size and ship it right???????
I feel very heavy hearted writing this review. I wanted to love this mattress; I am definitely the target market for the elegant design and excellent customer service of Casper. I ended up purchasing via Amazon Prime since Casper was out of stock. This gave me only 30 days to try the mattress. I am 5'8" and 123 lbs. The Casper site says this mattress is good for two adults each up to 250 lbs. I really feel like BMI is the most important indicator, and I definitely fell below the undefined minimum. I have been sleeping on foam mattresses for 10+ yrs. My first out of college was the Sultan Tuvebo from Ikea; it served me well (probably not environmentally friendly but was certainly a cheap comfy option). Since I did not purchase through Casper, I was not eligible to receive the extra latex layer they had been offering as a pilot program. There is no way to buy this extra layer from them or receive it from Amazon, and Casper did not think it would help given how hard the bed was for me personally. Amazon customer service handled the return well once I got the U.S. on the phone as this was way too complicated for the foreign offices. Once I unzipped the mattress, I was also thoroughly disappointed with the quality of the base layer foam; it fell apart in my nails. For those who like American made foam mattresses at a reasonable price, I would recommend Select Foam. They also offer 90 day trial and will give you a recommendation based on BMI. If you happen to live in Miami, they have a store front on Calle Ocho called Brickell Mattress. I'm sorry I strayed from them; my neck paid the price.
This is now my second Casper mattress I purchased.
If you'd like $50 OFF (disclaimer I also get $50 off up to 5 times) leave your email in the comments and I'll send you a link.
The mattress IS definitely different. I've had a serta icomfort (DONT buy!), pillow tops, spring mattresses, and costco version memory foam. Casper's mattress is firmer, and I was stiff the first couple nights sleeping on it but got used to it after a week. I sleep on my back so I can't sleep for side sleepers, but the mattress gives me the perfect level of support. I did request the memory foam topper at the end of my first month because I wanted a tad more cushion but could have been fine without it. My first casper i bought 4 months ago, and still like it a lot. This next one is replacing a terrible icomfort in our guest room. If my caspers are still great in a couple years I will be shocked and thrilled, I just don't expect longevity out of anything anymore. crossing my fingers!! definitely good enough to buy a second at this price point.
***update: it's 6 months and I still love the mattress (WITH the topper). Thinking about buying a pillow.
So far, so great! I was a bit apprehensive prior to this purchase. I am not really fond of pushy advertising (there are subway adds for these mattresses everywhere), and I have never purchased a foam mattress. This mattress was worth every penny. I have always spent small fortunes on mattresses, and was happy to pay less. Really comfy, no shifting for the other person in bed, and a great price. It would have made for a very comical Youtube video, but I managed to unload and place it onto my frame, the Zinus 14 inch SmartBase Mattress Foundation, by myself. It's pretty darn heavy, and instructs team lifting which I would whole heartedly support.
I did some research and asked a number of friends which foam mattresses they recommend. The Casper and Tuft and Needle both got consistently good reviews. The Needle was a bit to firm for some. Both have 100 day money back guarantees, so I really couldn't go wrong. I am very happy with this purchase.
Even if you are a "verified" purchaser does that guarantee you're not being recompensed for your review? This is the most miserable thing I have ever slept on. It is hard as a rock. Just a big chunk of foam with zero comfort. We are four days in and have added our foam topper from our old bed just to make it somewhat tolerable. I just don't understand how people can think this is comfortable unless they're used to sleeping on park benches. I know everyone has different likes, but I find it hard to believe the authenticity of these reviews.
We finally decided to go RV'ing full time. The mattress in our RV was decent, but after laying on the old one for about 20 minutes, it felt like I was laying on the floor. After plenty of research, we came across the Casper mattress. I was a bit skeptical not knowing how the mattress felt and how long it would last, but so far so good! We have been sleeping on this mattress for 3 weeks now and cannot complain, the comfort level is great and getting this mattress in the RV was a breeze. I would highly recommend it!
I'm a back sleeper and prefer a somewhat firmer mattress, so that's my point of reference. I like this mattress far better than any previous mattress I've owned, despite it costing a decent bit less. It is pretty firm, but that's a selling point to me. It seems to offer quite good support across the entirety of my body - no sense of getting swallowed that some memory foam options seem to have. There is no sense of disturbance from someone else moving around in the bed (unless they keep kicking you and have no respect for personal space...) which is great. Overall, really love the mattress.
Just wish it didn't way literally 100lbs - it can be challenging to move about
Just received it. Rolled it out. Laying on it now. This mattress is incredible. I have hip dysplasia and a compressed vertebrae, this thing is the bomb. Delivered in 24 hours for an express rate. Worth every penny.
I bought it on a recommendation from a friend who has a bad back he is a side sleeper. Good and firm after you sink in 4-6 inches but not getting a good night's sleep on my back. It is better than the worn out mattress it replaced but still trying to get my back to like it. I want to like it, it is a quality product but not fitting my needs.
I did find that my back pain went away when I slept on this mattress but my husband, from day one, felt like the sides of the mattress didn't support him. We took away our old box spring to make sure it wasn't an issue with the box spring. He finally put a couple of books under the edge of his side and he felt like he wouldn't roll off (he's about 260 pounds). I like a firm mattress, and have had a latex one before from a local company in Eastern Massachusetts but I also felt it wasn't perfect. Maybe it's time for a good box spring again. If it were just me, I might have kept it, but since the hubby hates it and I'd give it a 7 out of 10, I guess it goes back. Good news is when I "chatted" with the Amazon rep, she said the shipping company would call in 2-3 days for a pick up and return.
I have fibromyalgia and wanted to love this mattress. In the short time we had it I woke up with my hand asleep due to pinching a nerve, my neck was messed up, headache and my pressure points are in agony. I did give it three stars, because the return was very easy.
